Member Spotlight: Douglas Hutt
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Douglas “Doug” Hutt, who will soon take the stage in Center Stage Jackson’s upcoming production of The Guys, September 10–13, 2026. Doug stars alongside Kary Swiontek in this intimate two-person play honoring the courage, compassion, and everyday heroes who answered the call following September 11. Presented during the 25th anniversary of 9/11, all proceeds from the production will benefit local first responders.
While The Guys is Doug’s latest role with CSJ, his first was Phoebus in The Hunchback of Notre Dame – a production that marked his return to theatre after many years away. Doug performed throughout high school and college, but stepped away from the stage as work and raising his children became his focus. Watching his daughter Ada perform in Descendants and Hello, Dolly! brought back the pull to perform, and he decided to audition for Hunchback. “I didn’t realize how much of a change this would have on me,” Doug shared.
Playing Phoebus challenged him with more acting and singing than he had done in years, along with stage combat. Just as important were the people he worked with, both onstage and behind the scenes. Doug says the experience “reignited my love for theatre” and left him excited to keep exploring what might come next.
Outside of theatre, Doug enjoys disc golf, which he describes as combining two things he loves: hiking and throwing. His recommendation? Give it a shot if you haven’t!
Doug’s dream role is Javert in Les Misérables, and there’s a special family connection behind that choice. “I grew up listening to my dad singing ‘Stars’ and have always wanted to be the one to sing it on stage.”
For Doug, community theatre provides an important outlet for the talent that exists throughout our community. He loves seeing all the different ways people contribute to making theatre happen – and we’re glad his own return to the stage brought him to CSJ.
